When children have mental health conditions, they often manifest themselves in behavioral issues. Some of the most common include:
Other symptoms of a mental health issue may go by unnoticed but can include sleep disturbances, changes in appetite, and social withdrawal.
In many cases, children with behavioral issues are suffering from undiagnosed mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or ADHD. Sometimes, there may not be an underlying condition, but the child could be struggling to adjust to life changes or other stress.
For some children, there are issues at home or school that lead to acting out or other behavioral problems. How parents or caregivers handle these outbursts can influence how often the child has them and how severe they become.

When you see Dr. Singh for your child’s behavioral issues, he spends time with the child to observe the behavior, including what leads up to it. He may look for underlying causes, such as depression, other mood issues, anxiety, or attention-deficit-hyperactivity-disorder (ADHD), or address any issues in the relationship dynamic between the caregiver and the child.
In many cases, Dr. Singh recommends parent psychoeducation and training. By modifying how you, the parent, react to a child’s behavior, you can change their behavior. Dr. Singh may engage the child and parents in family-focused therapy or use other treatment methods, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), individually.
Depending on the child’s behaviors, their severity, and any underlying conditions, Dr. Singh may prescribe medications to help reduce symptoms.
When you’re concerned about your child’s behavior, seek the help of a professional. Dr. Singh can observe and evaluate your child, determining if any underlying mental health conditions are impacting their behavior.
Sometimes it’s not a mental health condition causing behavioral issues. Stress, trauma, significant changes, or life events can also cause these issues.
If you’re struggling with behavioral issues with your child, contact Dr. Singh, a double board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist.
